CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its second shutout of the weekend Sunday afternoon, beating No. 6 James Madison 1-0 at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC senior Kate Scholl scored the game's only goal in the 57th minute and the Tar Heel defense held JMU scoreless for the first time this season to boost Carolina's record to 12-3 overall. James Madison, which had won a school-record 11 consecutive games, fell to 13-2.
"I'm absolutely delighted with the win today against a very tough and physical James Madison team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I think they're very athletic and fast and they gave us everything that we could handle. They're a fast-breaking team and I'm proud of [goalkeeper] Jackie Kintzer and the rest of the defense for holding on and getting the shutout."
On a Carolina penalty corner with just under 14 minutes to play in the game, senior Britt van Beek's initial shot hit another UNC player and bounced off. Scholl, a back from East Greenville, Pa., gathered the ball and shot it past JMU goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins from the left side of the cage. The goal was Scholl's second of the weekend and also her second of the season, and it gave the Tar Heels an advantage they wouldn't give up.
Just over a minute later at the other end of the field, JMU's Melissa Stefaniak got off a shot with Kintzer away from the cage after she had gone out to defend on the ball. But Tar Heel junior Melanie Brill stepped in for the defensive save to keep the Dukes off the scoreboard.
UNC finished with 13 shots to James Madison's 11, but the Dukes were more active in the second half with nine of their shots coming after the break. JMU had nine penalty corners - eight in the second half - to UNC's six.
Kintzer finished the game with seven saves and Cutchins had six. Carolina started the weekend with a 3-0 win Saturday over Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Virginia to improve to 3-1 in league play. Next up for the Tar Heels is the final conference game of the season, a trip to College Park, Md., to face No. 2 Maryland on Saturday.
