Former Tar Heel Jawad Williams, who has spent the last several years playing in Japan, Spain, Israel and in southern California in the NBA's Developmental League, has achieved his longstanding goal of making an NBA roster -- and in his hometown of Cleveland, no less.
Williams earned a spot on the Cleveland Cavaliers' 15-man squad, the team announced on Thursday.
"I'm not going to celebrate, but I think my family will celebrate," Williams told the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper on Thursday afternoon. "For me the process is never over, I have to continue to work hard and prove I belong."
The Plain Dealer writes:
"Williams still has a non-guaranteed contract which won't be fully guaranteed until Jan. 10, so he knows there is no time to relax. Last season, rookie forward Anthony Tolliver made the team's final cut but was waived before the opener when Sasha Pavlovic ended his contract holdout. So nothing is assured, which is why Williams is tempering his enthusiasm for the moment.
"'You never know what is going to happen in this business," Williams said. "It is a blessing after all the work I have put in.'"
