Heels Fall To Tigers 3-2 In Double Overtime

Clemson, SC - Clemson ended No. 7 North Carolina's three-match winning streak Saturday, defeating the Heels 3-2 in double overtime. Clemson improved to 5-7-2 and 3-3-1 on the season as the Heels fall to 11-3-1 and 3-3-0 on the year.
Clemson's Nathan Thornton scored in the 108th minute, off assists from fellow Tigers' Bryson Moore and Nick Burton. Thornton, who now has three goals on the season, also scored in the 50th minute for the Tigers. Junior Hassan Ibrahim added the third goal for the Tigers in the 78th minute as Clemson rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the first half.
Senior Tar Heel forward Brian Shriver scored in the 35th mintue, his 13th on the season, off an assist from sophomore Dustin McCarty. McCarty entered the game in the 30th minute and found Shriver shortly after to put the Heels ahead 1-0 in the first half. Shriver opened the week tied for third nationally with 12 goals this season.
Shriver also recored his second assist on the season, connecting with freshman Billy Schuler in the 60th minute to put the Heels ahead 2-1. Schuler recorded his third goal this season before the Tigers' Ibrahim provided the equalizer in the 78th minute.
Saturday night's match was the 53rd meeting between Clemson and North Carolina on the soccer field. Clemson now leads the overall series 27-19-6. When the two teams play at Clemson, the Tigers now lead the series, 15-5-4.
North Carolina will travel to Buies Creek, NC Tuesday October 28th to play Campbell before returning home for their final home match at Fetzer Field against Wake Forest Saturday November 1st.
