CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A night after winning their ninth consecutive match the North Carolina volleyball team took a step back Friday night in the Dean E. Smith Center with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) loss to Florida State. With the loss Carolina falls to 20-10 on the year and 14-5 in the ACC and faces a must win situation Nov. 28 when the Tar Heels host NC State at 1 p.m. with the ACC title on the line. A win by the Tar Heels would clinch their first title since the 2005 squad took the championship.
Florida State took control right away with a 4-3 lead in the opening set before cruising to the 25-17 win. Carolina took the opening two points of the set on an Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland kill and a Seminole error but it would be the only lead of the set for Carolina. The Tar Heels hit .139 in the opening set, while Florida State tallied 17 kills for a .310 hitting percentage en route to the 1-0 lead.
The second set was not much better for the Tar Heels as the Seminoles overcame another Hanson-Tuntland kill to take the lead at 2-1 and never looked back in a 25-20 win. Florida State held a two-point lead midway through the set at 10-8 before Brianna Berry served three consecutive points in a 4-1 run that essentially sealed the Tar Heels fate. The Seminoles finished with 17 more kills in the second set and after two frames held a 34-19 kill advantage over the Tar Heels who looked to regroup before the third set.
Carolina came out and tallied 15 kills in the third set, but were outhit .220-.184 by the Seminoles who would go on to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0. The Tar Heels were unable to get over the hump in the third set as they closed Florida State's lead to one on several occasions before tying the score at 13-13 and 14-14. Carolina was unable to take the lead allowing three straight points before answering with a 3-0 run of its own. Florida State would hold the Tar Heels in check with another 3-0 run to take a 20-17 lead before hanging on for the 25-21 win.
The four Carolina seniors (Kelly Davies, Brianna Eskola, Stephanie Jansma and Lauren Prussing) were honored before the match for their efforts during their four-year careers in Chapel Hill. Eskola moved within three of the ACC career digs mark and needs just four against NC State on Nov. 28 to become the conference's all-time leader.
