CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 20 North Carolina will look to snap a three-match losing streak when it travels to No. 4 Maryland for the final contest of the regular season Friday at 8 p.m. at Ludwig Field. A webcast of the key conference match will be available live and on-demand via ACC Select.
Seeding for next week's ACC Tournament is on the line for the Tar Heels (11-5-1, 3-4-0 ACC). Carolina can finish anywhere between fourth and seventh in the league standings depending on Friday's outcome and other matches across the league. The Terps (14-3-0, 5-2-0 ACC) have won seven straight and are currently in second place in the ACC.
Senior forward Brian Shriver leads Carolina and shares the top spot in the ACC with 13 goals and is third in the league with 29 points. The Tar Heels are second in the league with 40 goals, while Maryland is third with 38. The Terps are paced by Jeremy Hall's 11 goals.
Defensively, Maryland has surrendered just 16 goals, while the Tar Heels have allowed 23.
Maryland leads the all-time series, 39-21-3, and the Terps are unbeaten in the last five meetings. Carolina's last win in the series came in Chapel Hill in 2003.
UNC will look to avoid its first four-match losing streak since 1997. Carolina suffered road losses at Clemson and Campbell before falling to No. 1 Wake Forest, 4-2, last time out. The Tar Heels held the Demon Deacons without a shot in the first half and carried a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The 2008 ACC Men's Soccer Championship opens Tuesday, Nov. 11 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
