CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior midfielder Garry Lewis netted the game-winning goal to advance the Tar Heels into Saturday's quarterfinal match against Northwestern. Lewis has scored four goals this season, including an overtime game-winner against rival NC State. Lewis took time this week to answer a few questions for TarHeelBlue.com.
TarHeelBlue.com: Can you describe your overtime game-winning goal in the win over UIC?
Garry Lewis: It was an amazing feeling for me and especially for the team to come from behind and win in the style we did. We all deserved it and credit goes to all the guys on the team for playing their part. The eventual game winner came from a corner kick that eventually fluttered near the goal line. Brian Shriver found the ball at his feet and made a great turn and chipped the ball over the UIC's defense where I was sitting unmarked at the back post. I saw the opportunity and took advantage of it. I was shocked, but relieved to have such an opportunity come my way in overtime.
THB.com: As a senior, how do you lead?
GL: I lead by example. With the experience I have gained through four years of college and the wisdom I now have as a senior perhaps gives me a better understanding of how to be a model leader and a good person on and off the field. Accountability is something that I try to reiterate all the time to our younger guys. Be accountable for yourself and make positive decisions off the field, and usually it will translate on the field.
THB.com: Saturday's game will be your last game at Fetzer Field, what does that mean to you? What is your favorite memory of Fetzer?
GL: Playing my last game on Fetzer is added motivation to win. It's a bittersweet feeling. I am sad that this will be my last game on Fetzer, but I am happy at the same time because we get a shot at advancing to the final four on our home soil. My fondest memory of Fetzer would have to be scoring in overtime against NC State earlier this year.
THB.com: What are your hobbies outside of soccer and what do you like to do in your free time?
GL: Traveling, camping, road trips, playing board or card games, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing and generally anything that takes place outdoors. In my free time I enjoy a nice latte from Starbucks.
THB.com: How would you describe your style of play?
GL: Simple.
THB.com: What is your favorite movie?
GL: Dumb and Dumber because no matter how many times I see it, I still get a kick out of it.
THB.com: What did the team do to turn around a five-game losing streak?
GL: Wake up!
THB.com: What's the best thing about being a Tar Heel?
GL: Being apart of such a rich and great institution with unrivaled academic and athletic traditions.
THB.com: What are your plans for next year?
GL: To be playing professional soccer somewhere. If that doesn't work out to take some time off and travel or maybe get a job in a different country.
