Keller Claims Pole Vault Title At New Balance Collegiate Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The North Carolina track and field teams completed the first day of the prestigious New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Friday in New York City, N.Y. and seven Tar Heels turned in top 10 performances, led by Daniel Keller who claimed the pole vault title as he cleared 16-02.75 in the win. Addie Bracy tallied a provisional mark in the 5,000 as she took home third place in the race. The Tar Heels will wrap up competition on Saturday in the second day of action.
racy finished the 5,000 in a time of 16:45.53 to finish third and claim her first NCAA provisional mark of the year. Lauren Holesh claimed another top five finish for the Heels as she crossed the line in 9:46.77, which put her in a tie for fourth in the 3,000. Brock Baker ran a season-best 8:35.99 in the 3,000 as he finished 33rd.
The duo of Callie Pottinger and Christine Johnson finished 18th and 22nd, respectively in the 400 as Pottinger finished in 55.53 and Johnson not far behind at 55.91. Meanwhile, in the men's 400 freshman Charles Cox posted his best time as a Tar Heel as he qualified for the final as he ran a 47.77 in the prelims. Ian Williamson (49.33) finished 56th and Desmond Layne (50.68) finished in 92nd. In the women's 1,000, Callan Fike brought home a fifth place finish with a time of 2:55.78.
LaToya James picked up her third provisional mark of the year with an 8.39 showing in the 60-meter hurdles prelims before posting an 8.41 in the finals for fifth place. Tyra Johnson finished 23rd in the 60-meter dash as she clocked in with a time of 7.63. The men's medley relay team finished eighth in the race but posted their best time of the season as they crossed the line in 10:01.40.
In the field events, Keller was the story as he cleared 16-02.75 to win the pole vault. On the women's side, Alison McGinnis cleared 10-10.00 to tie for 19th. Walter Henning claimed a top 10 finish in the shot put as recorded a throw of 54-04.75 for 10th place. Not far behind was Ian Reynolds who finished 18th with a throw of 52-05.50. In the women's shot, Mary Angell took home 12th with a toss of 47-05.25 just ahead of Joceyln White (44-10.75; 19th) and Kimberly Warren (44-08.00; 21st). In the long jump, Austin Davis landed 23-09.50 from the line as he finished in fifth with his best jump as a collegiate.
