CLEMSON, S.C. - The North Carolina rowing team raced to its best conference championship performance in program history at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Regatta on Saturday at Lake Hartwell, finishing fourth of six teams with the Tar Heel second varsity eight and novice eight each claiming third-place finishes.
Senior Lisy McIntee and junior Ruby Woodside were named to the All-ACC team. McIntee's honor was the third of her career, making her one of only four student-athletes in ACC history to earn all-conference rowing honors three times.
The Tar Heels' team finish marked UNC's best-ever in the six-team league. Carolina last finished fourth in 2004, when there were four teams in the conference. The Tar Heels were third of four teams in 2000, the first year that the ACC sponsored rowing competition and the last time that UNC didn't find itself in the final spot.
"We got good performances from every single crew against some very tough competition," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We're following a trend of seeing our best times of the season every time we go down the race course, week after week. The girls feel good about what we did and feel confident about their ability to bring their best race on race day.
"I was proud of them for being able to stay focused and do the things that we needed to do. Across the board that's exactly what our team did and that's exactly why we had a successful day."
Virginia claimed the conference crown for the ninth time, finishing with 59 points and winning three of four races. The Cavaliers have won every ACC rowing title contested. Host Clemson was second with 51, Duke had 33, UNC had 28, Miami 24 and Boston College 12.
In the morning's first race, the UNC varsity four was fifth in a time of 7:50.8. Virginia won the race in 7:18.6, followed by Clemson (7:25.9), Duke (7:43.7) and Miami (7:46.5). Boston College was sixth in 8:13.3. The Tar Heel lineup was Amy Dement (coxswain), Emily Schultz, Maeghan Sill, Eugenia Delbono and Molly Jones.
Next up, UNC's third-seeded novice eight took third in its race in 7:06.0. Clemson was first in 6:46.3, Virginia second in 6:47.9 and Miami fourth in 7:31.1. Carolina's lineup was Jill Lunsford (coxswain), Paige Wolf, Katherine Williamson, Anna Noguchi, Cait Clendenin, Katie Frayler, Lindsay Paterniti, Vanessa Matos and Tallie Casucci.
The Tar Heel second varsity eight turned in the surprise performance of the day, finishing third after entering the race as the No. 5 seed. Carolina's time was 6:55.1, behind first-place Virginia (6:31.4) and second-place Clemson (6:36.8). Duke, Boston College and Miami rounded out the field. UNC's lineup was Paige Wall (coxswain), Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Andi Drabot, Andrea McGovern, Katie Wood, JoAnne Rogers, Kelsey Grich and Kristi Roblin.
Carolina was third in the standings with 20 points heading into the morning's final race, the varsity eight. The Tar Heels finished fifth in 6:48.1, matching their seed heading into the race. UNC just edged Boston College, which came across in 6:46.8. Virginia, ranked third in the nation, was first in 6:22.0, a record time for the ACC Regatta. Clemson was second in 6:32.6, Duke was third in 6:40.1 and Miami fourth in 6:46.3. UNC's lineup for the varsity eight was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Maegan Wareham, McIntee, Lindley Barrow, Cara Van Dorn, Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Megan McMullin and Kathryn Winz.
In addition to the varsity eight, there were two other regatta records set on the day, in Clemson's novice eight win and Virginia's varsity four victory.
y finishing ahead of Carolina in the final standings, Duke claimed the rowing point in this year's Carlyle Cup battle, the annual competition between the two schools. The Tar Heels currently lead the race 16-6, with additional points up for grabs this weekend in men's and women's golf and men's and women's track and field.
UNC's next action is at South/Central Region Sprints, hosted by the University of Tennessee in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 17-18. "We're excited to race again and we feel pretty good about things," Haney said. "We've got exams to focus on between now and then, but we're excited to see what speed we can gain in the next month."
