OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The North Carolina rowing team wrapped up the 2007-08 season Sunday following two days of racing at the South/Central Region Springs, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Melton Hill Lake. UNC finished ninth in the South Region standings and 19th overall with a total of 61 points.
The Tar Heel novice eight again turned in the team's best performance, finishing third in Sunday's petite final to take ninth overall in the field of 14. UNC's second novice eight finished 13th in the field.
The Carolina varsity eight and second varsity eight both finished second in their respective "D" finals on Sunday. The varsity eight missed first in its final race by less than a second, finishing in 7:09.83, just behind SMU at 7:09.20. On Saturday, the varsity eight finished fifth in its morning heat and in the same spot in its C/D semifinal to fall to Sunday's D final. The second varsity eight met the same fate, taking fifth in the morning and fourth of four in its C/D semifinal to end up in the D final.
The lineup for the UNC varsity eight was Shannon Wilson (coxswain), Maegan Wareham, Lisy McIntee, Lindley Barrow, Cara Van Dorn, Ruby Woodside, Whitney Hileman, Megan McMullin and Kathryn Winz. The second varsity eight lineup was Paige Wall (coxswain), Diane Reynolds, Chandler Sours, Andi Drabot, Andrea McGovern, Katie Wood, JoAnne Rogers, Kelsey Grich and Kristi Roblin.
"For the varsity eights, it was disappointing that they didn't have their final race to be an indication of the season they worked so hard for," UNC coach Sarah Haney said Sunday. "We did not race well yesterday, which was really important to set us up for the finals today. So we're just a little disappointed and a little frustrated with that because we were prepped to finish our season with the same fight and intensity that we showed through ACC's."
The varsity four finished fourth in the "C" final on Sunday in a time of 8:15.05. Racing in that boat were Amy Dement (coxswain), Emily Schultz, Maeghan Sill, Eugenia Delbono and Molly Jones. "For the varsity four, we finished higher than we were ranked, so that was positive," Haney said. "They raced well yesterday, raced well again today and came off the water feeling good about their performance, as they should."
The novice eight was fourth in its Saturday morning heat and fifth in its Saturday afternoon repechage to advance to the petite final. In that Tar Heel boat were Jill Lunsford (coxswain), Paige Wolf, Katherine Williamson, Anna Noguchi, Cait Clendenin, Katie Frayler, Lindsay Paterniti, Vanessa Matos and Tallie Casucci.
"The novice eight had a good race yesterday morning, then with tough conditions yesterday afternoon we stumbled a little bit with a lack of experience that set them up for a different final than they were hoping for, but then they raced well," Haney said. "We feel good about their performance and their ability to come back and race well after stumbling a little bit."
The second novice eight was the only "B" boat in the field, so achieved more than projected by finishing out of the final spot and edging Texas in its two-boat "C" final Sunday.
The weekend event marked the end of the UNC rowing careers for five seniors: Sarah Low, Lisy McIntee, Cara Van Dorn, Maegan Wareham and Kathryn Winz.
"At this point, we're looking ahead at things that we want to carry over from this season, what we did extremely well and the things that we need to work on," Haney said. "We're trying to minimize our weaknesses and emphasize our strengths and we feel like this team - novice and varsity combined - has a lot of strengths that we're really excited about building upon next year. We're sad to lose our seniors as always, but the future definitely looks pretty good and pretty bright for Carolina rowing in 2008-09."
