CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Last weekend's series win at then-No. 1 Miami has vaulted North Carolina to a consensus No. 1 national ranking for the first time in program history. The Tar Heels currently hold the top spot in rankings by Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Rivals.com.
Monday's polls mark the 10th week that Carolina has held the top spot in school history - all in the last three seasons. After holding the top spot for five weeks in 2006, the Tar Heels were rated No. 1 by Baseball America for four weeks last season ending with the March 12 poll.
The Tar Heels, who are 28-8 as the nation's No. 1-ranked team, open defense of their 2007 ACC title Wednesday against Virginia at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
