CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 24 North Carolina will open the 2008 regular season this weekend with the annual Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels will face Florida International at 7:30 p.m. Friday followed by a meeting with VCU at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
Top-ranked Wake Forest rounds out the field and will face VCU at 5 p.m. Friday and FIU at 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission to all four games will be free of charge as will be the case for each men's and women's soccer game at Fetzer this season.
The Tar Heels are coming off a pair of exhibitions at last weekends National Soccer Festival. Carolina fell to No. 7 Indiana and then scored a 2-0 win over No. 12 Akron behind a pair of Brian Shriver goals.
Carolina is 1-2 in three all-time meetings with Florida International, including a 3-2 overtime loss in their most recent meeting in 2004. Against VCU, the Tar Heels are 3-2-1, and the teams played to a scoreless tie a year ago. This marks the seventh straight season that the Tar Heels and Rams have met.
Both FIU and VCU were in the field for the 2004 Carolina Nike Classic and handed the Tar Heels two of the three losses in their annual home event. UNC is 14-3-1 in the tournament.
