CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After a solid start to the season in a pair of weekend tournaments, No. 11 North Carolina will open the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference schedule against NC State Friday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (3-0-1) have dropped just one of their last 14 meetings with the Wolfpack (0-2-1).
Carolina has outscored the opposition by an 8-2 margin through four games, including a pair of early-season three-goal outbursts in wins over Florida International and South Carolina. Junior forward Eddie Ababio leads the Tar Heels with three goals and seven points, while freshman midfielder Kirk Urso has three points on a goal and an assist. Six different players have scored for UNC.
Defensively, the Tar Heels rank second in the ACC with a 0.47 goals against average, as does senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe with the same number. Carolina has already logged a pair of shutouts in the early season.
NC State has scored just two goals on the year, while yielding seven. The Wolfpack tied Mercer in its opener before suffering losses to Harvard and American last weekend.
Carolina leads the all-time series with State, 46-20-11. In the team's last meeting at Fetzer, the Pack posted a 3-1 win for its only victory in the series since 1997.
With a win or tie Friday, the Tar Heels would be unbeaten after their first five matches for the first time since 2005.
