Carolina Golfers Move Up To Third Place At Cougar Classic

The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a four-under-par 284 in the third round of the Cougar Classic and moved up to third place with an eight-over 872 total. Georgia captured the team championship with a six-under 858 total after posting a three-over 291 on Tuesday.
"I am really pleased with our play today," says Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin. "We certainly would have liked to have won, but finishing third means we beat 19 teams. I am pleased with the play of our freshmen played and we're just gonna get better. We're glad to have one tournament under our belts."
It was a team effort for Carolina, which moved from sixth place to third, as three Tar Heels fired a three-under 69 in the final round - senior Sydney Crane and freshmen Allie White and Catherine O'Donnell. Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., carded five birdies and two bogies on her way to a 69 and a tie for fourth place. She finished with a five-under 211 total after shooting a pair of 71s in the first two rounds. White also tied for fourth place at five-under 211 after previous rounds of 70-72. A native of Lancaster, Ohio, White's final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th hole plus two birdies and a bogey. O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., also carded an eagle, on the par-5 15th hole, in addition to three birdies and two bogies. She posted a five-over 221 total to tie for 28th place. Kate Thomas, a junior from Murwillumbah, Australia, carded a five-over 77 on Tuesday for a 229 total and tied for 59th place while senior Lauren Hunt, from Little River, S.C., shot a six-over 78 for a 232 total to tie for 74th place.
Caroline Westrup of Florida State captured the individual title after firing a six-under 66 in the final round for a 10-under 206 total. Whitney Neuhauser of Virginia was the runner-up, finishing two shots back at eight-under 208. Georgia's Marta Silva finished third after carding her third consecutive two-under 70 to finish at six-under 210. Three players tied for fourth place at five-under 211 - Carolina's Crane and White and Georgie's Mallory Hetzel, the leader going into the final round.
Alabama fired the day's low round, a six-under-par 282, to finish at one-under 863 in second place, five strokes behind the Bulldogs. Carolina and Florida State both fired 284s, the day's second-lowest round. Carolina's third-place finish put them two srokes ahead of Virginia which finished fourth at 874 while Florida State was fifth at 875, LSU was sixth at 878 and South Carolina finished seventh at 882.
The 54-hole event was played at Yeamans Hall Golf Club which features a par 72, 6,159-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action Oct. 3-5 when they play host to the Tar Heel Invitational to be played at UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill.
