DURHAM, N.C. - Third-ranked North Carolina outshot Fordham 32-4 and defeated the Rams 6-0 Sunday afternoon at the Duke adidas Soccer Classic at Koskinen Stadium. Freshman forward Brittany Bartok scored the first two goals of her Tar Heel career while Meghan Klingenberg had her second goal of the weekend and forward Nikki Washington added an assist and a goal on UNC's first two scores of the match.
Junior defender Whitney Engen was named the defensive most valuable player of the 2008 Duke adidas Classic while Ashlyn Harris, Courtney Jones and Yael Averbuch were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Carolina outscored Georgia and Fordham by a combined margin of 10-0 in the Duke adidas Classic and the Tar Heels have now outscored their last three opponents by a 15-0 margin. North Carolina improved to 7-1-1 in its final non-conference game of the season while Fordham fell to 3-3-1. UNC played all 24 players dressed out for the match and tallied five times in the second half on 17 shots.
The six goals were the largest margin of victory for UNC since a 7-0 win over UNC Asheville on November 11, 2006 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The five second-half goals were the most by UNC in a half since Carolina scored five goals in the second half of a 6-0 victory over Davidson on September 2, 2005 at Fetzer Field.
Despite outshooting the Rams 15-1 in the first half, Carolina carried only a 1-0 lead into halftime as Elizabeth Roald of the Rams made four first half saves and the Tar Heels just missed on several other golden opportunities, including a shot from long range by Yael Averbuch that clanged off the cross bar.
The Tar Heels took the lead at 9:39 on Casey Nogueira's sixth goal of the season. Nikki Washington sent a cross from the deep left corner across the penalty area to Allie Long who redirected the ball to the middle of the box where Nogueira volleyed it in.
Carolina nursed that 1-0 lead until the 53rd minute when goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris made the play that broke the match open. Harris came out of her penalty area to gather in a ball that had been floated over the UNC defensive line. Harris sent a 70-yard strike down the middle of the pitch that Nikki Washington gathered in without losing stride to score on a breakaway into the lower keft corner.
The Heels were the beneficiary of an own goal at 61:53 as Fordham's Catherine Huvane redirected a Tar Heel cross past her own goalkeeper into the lower right corner.
UNC went on to tack on three more goals. At 66:31, Meghan Klingenberg scored her second goal of the weekend as she corralled a long cross from the left side by Tobin Heath and redirected it into the left side netting.
Carolina's last two goals came off the foot of freshman striker Brittani Bartok. At 80:57, Bartok pounced on Rachel Wood's cross from the left side and one-touched the ball into the back of the goal from 10 yards out. Then at 86:37, Bartok finished into the upper left corner of the goal after Katie Klimczak dumped a ball over the defense into the penalty area to Bartok. Senior Mandy Moraca also assisted on the goal.
The Tar Heels outshot Fordham 32-4 and had a 7-0 edge in corner kicks. Roald played all 90 minutes for Fordham and had seven saves and six goals allowed. Ashlyn Harris, Amanda Tucker and Monica Welsh-Loveman combined on a 90-minute shutout with Harris making two saves and Welsh-Loveman recording the first save of her career.
The Tar Heels open Atlantic Coast Conference play this week as they play at Clemson Thursday at 7 p.m. and then play host to Maryland next Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Tar Heels' first home match in 21 days.
