GREENVILLE, S.C. --- North Carolina junior Katrina Tsang and freshman Shinann Featherston won three matches to capture the flight one doubles title at the Furman Fall Classic Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Tar Heel duo defeated a pair of top-20 opponents en route to the victory in the first major tournament of the fall season. The combo of seniors Meg Fanjoy and Laura Reichert also triumphed in the final of flight three. All singles matches were pushed to Saturday due to inclement weather in the area.
Tsang and Featherston opened the day by topping Northwestern's Georgia Rose and Lauren Liu, the No. 7 tandem in the country, 8-6. After an 8-5 win over South Carolina's Natasa Vuckovic and Ana Marija Zubori, the UNC twosome faced ACC rivals Federica Van Adrichem and Ani Mijacika of Clemson. Tsang and Featherston needed a tiebreaker, but ultimately prevailed, 9-8 (3), over the No. 17-ranked duo for an impressive start to the fall campaign.
In flight three, Fanjoy and Reichert won three matches to take the title. The senior tandem topped Furman's Jennifer Betts and Susan Bitetti in the quarterfinals, 8-3, before handing South Carolina's Ashley Miller and Jelena Rajic an 8-3 beating in the semis. In the finals, the Tar Heel duo topped Tennessee's Natalie Pluskota and and Zsófia Zubor, 8-5.
Two other Carolina doubles teams were in action Friday, as Sophie Grabinski and Jelena Durisic won their quarterfinal match, while Linzee Mabrey and Jocelyn Ffriend won a consolation contest.
Singles play is set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
