OCCOQUAN, Va. - The North Carolina rowing team came away with wins by the varsity eight and varsity four in racing Sunday at the Occoquan Chase. In a day of racing on the Occoquan Reservoir, the Tar Heels gained valuable fall racing experience.
"We had some great results today and we feel really good about that," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We have an incredibly young team - we lost a lot of depth to graduation. We graduated six of night from last year's varsity eight, so we only had three returning from that boat, but we've made some really good progress."
UNC won the open women's 8+ in a time of 17:16.92 and also took third in 18:09.72. In the open women's 4+, UNC was first in 18:52.85, fifth in 19:58.26 and eighth in 20:49.21.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the final competition of the fall, the Head of the Chattahoochee regatta on Nov. 7-8 in Chattanooga, Tenn. There, Haney hopes to see even more improvement from her team. "That's what this whole fall is going to be about, given the youth on our team and the inexperience," she said. "But we're working hard and we feel good about what we're doing."
