HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior Illse Davids' penalty stroke just before halftime provided the only goal the North Carolina field hockey team would need as the Tar Heel defense earned its 11th shutout and second-ranked UNC beat host James Madison 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. Carolina improved to 15-0 on the season with the win, while the Dukes fell to 10-5.
"I felt good about our effort," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "The weather was cold and windy, but we managed to perform well. We got the one-goal lead in the first half and were able to add to it in the second."
Davids' penalty stroke came 1:02 before halftime and was her sixth goal of the season. The Tar Heels added one more in the second half, by senior Danielle Forword on a penalty corner. That goal, the 11th of the year for Forword, came at the 46:56 mark on assists from senior Riley Foster and junior Katelyn Falgowski.
UNC led 22-3 in shots and 7-4 in penalty corners. All of JMU's shots and corners came in the second half.
Junior Jackie Kintzer played all 70 minutes in goal for the Tar Heels, making one second-half save on JMU's only shot on goal. James Madison's Kelsey Cutchins made 10 saves on the afternoon.
The win wrapped up a successful road trip for the Tar Heels, who earned a 2-1 overtime win over conference rival Virginia on Saturday in Charlottesville. "It's challenging to play two ranked teams back-to-back on the road," Shelton said. "I thought winning both games showed toughness and maturity on the part of our team."
Next up for Carolina is a battle with No. 1 Maryland, also undefeated on the season. The teams are playing for the top seed in the upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. The Tar Heels host the defending national champion Terrapins Saturday at 1 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
