Tar Heel sophomore Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., grabbed a share of the individual championship at last year's Tar Heel Invitational. She fired a two-under-par 70 in the final round for an even-par 216 total to capture a share of the title with a pair of Wake Forest players, Jean Chua and Natalie Sheary. O'Donnell was an All-ACC performer last year and was selected the ACC Freshman of the Year.
Carolina has played in two tournaments so far this fall. The Tar Heels finished third at the Duramed Cougar Classic played Sept. 13-14 in Hanahan, S.C. Three Tar Heels, Catherine O'Donnell, Kate Thomas and Margaret Pentrack, posted top-25 finishes. O'Donnell tied for seventh place at two-under-par 214 after firing rounds of 69-72-73. Thomas, a senior from Murwillumbah, Australia, tied for 16th place at two-over 218 and Margaret Pentrack, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa., tied for 25th with a 220 total. O'Donnell tied for third place at the NGCA Collegiate Match Play Championship, the first event of the fall campaign. The Tar Heels tied for 11th place in the 36-hole medal qualifier.
