Tar Heel Trio Honored By Soccer America

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina defender Zach Loyd and junior midfielder Michael Farfan added yet another All-America honor, and forward Enzo Martinez was a first-team All-Freshman selection Friday when Soccer America handed out its annual awards. Loyd was a first-team Soccer America MVP selection, while Farfan was named to the second team.
A Verdigris, Okla., product, Loyd is the Tar Heels' senior captain and tallied two goals and two assists for six points in 17 games. Playing center back for the first time in his career due to injuries on the UNC backline, Loyd has anchored a defense that has posted 12 shutouts and allowed just 12 goals all season. Loyd, also a first-team All-ACC choice, was one of 15 semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy and was selected to participate in next month's Major League Soccer Combine.
Loyd has also earned first-team All-America honors from the NSCAA and College Soccer News. He was named to the NCAA College Cup All-Tournament Team for the second year in a row.
A first-team All-ACC pick, Farfan claims All-America honors in his first season at Carolina after transferring from Cal State Fullerton. The Wildomar, Calif., product started all 22 games and is tied for third on the team with 14 points on five goals and four assists. He was a two-time ACC Player of the Week selection during the regular season.
Farfan has also nabbed All-America honors from the NSCAA, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer.
Martinez was a spark off the bench for the Tar Heels this season, totaling 10 points on three goals and four assists. The Rock Hill, S.C., native played in all 22 games and made six starts. He scored in two of the first three games of the season and tallied a season-best two assists in the win over Campbell.
