
No. 11 Carolina Shuts Out Two In-State Rivals

Chapel Hill, N.C. - No. 11 Carolina defeated two of its in-state rivals this afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels took on Davidson at 2:30 p.m. and continued against Elon at 7 p.m. proving their strength with two shutouts in one night.
Carolina started off strong against Davidson, winning all three doubles matches. The No. 15 doubles team of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand defeated Virginia Berry and Alison Rauh, 8-2, at the number one position. Katrina Tsang and Austin Smith teamed up at the number two position, beating Michele Fanney and Molly McDevitt by a score of 8-2 as well. At the number three position, Haley Hemm and Linzee Mabrey completed the doubles sweep, defeating their opponents, 8-3.
No. 47 Marand was quick to finish her singles match, defeating Fanney, 6-0, 6-2, at the number one position. Quick to follow was Meg Fanjoy at the number five position, defeating McDevitt, 6-1, 6-0. Jelena Durisic and Laura Reichert both defeated their Davidson opponents, 6-3, 6-3, at positions three and four, respectively. Jocelyn Ffriend played well at the number six position, beating her opponent, 6-1, 6-3. At the end of the match, all eyes were on No. 103 Austin Smith at the number two position to see if Carolina would be able to complete their shutout. With a 2-5 score in her second set, Smith dug deep and came from behind, defeating Berry 6-2, 7-6 (5) to the delight of her teammates and the fans.
The 7 p.m. match against Elon provided an opportunity for the Tar Heels to switch up their lineup, yet the results proved to be the same.
No. 45 Marand and Tsang defeated Anna Milian and Paige Kensrue 8-2 at the number one doubles position. Fanjoy and Reichert defeated Elisa Simonetti and Daleen Kloppers 8-1 at the number two doubles position and Mabrey and Stefi Gjine finished out the doubles wins, defeating Melissa Wolf and Hayley Wahl, 8-0, at the number three position.
Durisic stepped up to the number two singles position, quickly defeating Kensrue, 6-0, 6-0. No. 47 Marand defeated Milian at the number one position, 6-0, 6-1. Reichert moved up to the number three position, defeating Elisa Simonetti 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Jocelyn Ffriend also proved her strength at the number four position, defeating Wolf 6-1, 6-2. Freshmen Haley Hemm and Stefi Gjine also saw some action, defeating their opponents, 6-1, 6-0 at numbers five and six, respectively, sealing the shut out for the Tar Heels for the second time in one night.
The Tar Heels' next match will be on the road against Notre Dame on February 27. That match is set to begin at 3 p.m. Carolina will be on the road for the next month and a half before returning home to play April 1 against Duke.
