CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - As the UNC Men's Tennis team prepares for a first round ACC Tournament matchup with Clemson on Thursday, the compilation of their year-end statistics reveals a few impressive trends.
For the third straight year, Taylor Fogleman led the team in singles and doubles wins. While the Tar Heels' ACC Tournament and potential NCAA Tournament matches remain, his one-win edge over doubles partner Clay Donato and five-win lead over Donato in singles virtually assures him retaining the team lead in those categories through the end of the season barring an injury or some other unforeseen circumstance.
At this point, Fogleman has posted a career singles record of 84-26 and a career doubles record of 94-31. His overall winning percentage in his four years as a Tar Heel is a sublime .752, a testament to his consistent success in both singles and doubles play.
Donato's doubles play this season has been a highlight of Carolina's season, but in career perspective his skill in doubles is absolutely ridiculous. In only three seasons of NCAA tennis (he played his first season at Texas A&M), the junior from Canada has already compiled a 68-15 record for an astounding .819 win percentage. Even if Donato didn't win another doubles match this season, he would need to notch only two more victories in 2009-10 than in 2008-09 to reach the career 100-win plateau.
Carolina faces Clemson at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 16 at the Cary Tennis Park. Directions to the Park can be found in the above link to the ACC Men's Tennis Championship Central page. Updated stats are also linked above and in the sidebar on the Men's Tennis main page.
