Carolina Finishes Strong Against ODU

RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina rowing team hosted Old Dominion Saturday at Lake Wheeler, finishing strong with wins in the final two races of the morning.

"We felt like we did well," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "With exams coming, this was a tough academic week and we were pushing them pretty hard athletically as well. We were coming into this weekend tired, so we're pleased with this result."

The morning opened with the novice four race, which ODU won in 8:05.04. UNC's "A" boat was second in 8:08.5, with UNC "B" in 8:28.3.

Next up was the novice eight, another race won by ODU. The Lady Monarchs crossed in 6:57.6, with UNC finishing in 7:07.2.

Old Dominion won the varsity four in 7:40.73, with Carolina crossing in 7:52.97. Carolina's first win of the day came in the second novice eight race, with the Tar Heels finishing in 7:23.14 to ODU's 7:35.00.

The final race of the day was the varsity eight, and UNC won with a time of 6:50.45. Old Dominion was just behind in 6:52.42 and Carolina's second varsity eight was third in 7:12.54.

"ODU has a very fast varsity four and novice eight and we knew that going in, so we were pretty excited about what we were able to accomplish," Haney said. "We feel good and we're ready to go into exam week then get ready for Dad Vails."

Carolina closes out the season with the Dad Vail Regatta on May 8-9 in Philadelphia.
