North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox
Opening Statement:
"We're obviously disappointed. We didn't give ourselves a chance to win, and we had one of those innings where as a coach you kind of have nightmares about where you wake up in a cold sweat at night dreaming about those kinds of innings where you just cannot get an out. Give Virginia credit. We made some good pitches and they got some hits and we made some not-so-good pitches and they got some hits. It's just one of those things that happen and we couldn't recover."
On Virginia's big third inning against Alex White:
"I don't expect that from Alex, but it's just one of those things that happens in baseball. It happens against good teams, it happens against the aluminum bat. You saw a couple of those tonight and that's not to discredit Virginia in any way. They hit some balls hard."
North Carolina Junior RHP Alex White
On the big third inning:
"It's just one of those innings where I made some bad pitches and they got hits and made some pretty decent pitches and they got hits. I couldn't seem to find an out when I needed it or a big strikeout. It is just one of those things that happens and we'll move on."
Virginia Coach Brian O'Connor
Opening Statement:
"That was obviously a huge win for us, to have an opportunity to battle it out with Duke tomorrow night to go to the title game. Really, it's one of the stranger games that I've been involved with in my coaching year, to face a guy like Alex White, who is one of the top pitchers in the country if not the top pitcher and score 10 runs in one inning is really remarkable. It's amazing what can happen on a team when your confidence is high and guys start clutching up and getting big hits. It just seems to snowball and that's what happened in that inning. Obviously that inning was the complete story of the game. That, and I thought Danny Hultzen pitched a really good ballgame tonight and got us off to a great start."
Virginia Junior Catcher Franco Valdez
On the 10-run third inning:
"It was fun to be in the dugout after my at bat was over, after I was off the bases, just to see our team continue to get those hits and continue to have great at bats. It was fun to see us actually get a lot of things together and score 10 runs on guys like Alex White and (Brian) Moran."
