Tar Heels Advance At Dad Vails

PHILADELPHIA - The Tar Heel novice eight took second in its race to lead the North Carolina rowing team Friday at the Dad Vail Regatta, the largest college regatta in the U.S. Carolina will close out the 2008-09 season Saturday with a second day of racing on the Schuykill River.
"We'll just try to get the job done tomorrow and see how far we can get against some very good teams," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We feel good about where we are and think we'll end the season on a really positive note."
Although the schedule called for standard 2,000-meter races, strong currents on Friday forced a change of format to 1,500-meter time trials. The UNC novice eight was the runner-up in a field of 33 boats, advancing to Saturday's semifinal in a time of 5:05.66. From that race, the top two boats will make the grand final.
The Tar Heel novice four was 15th out of 49 boats in 5:37.74, also advancing to a semifinal on Saturday.
The varsity eight was 15th of 30 boats in 4:47.90, earning a semifinal spot for Saturday and a chance to advance to the finals.
The second varsity eight was sixth of 14 boats in 5:16.58, advancing straight to a six-boat final on Saturday afternoon.
The only UNC boat not to advance was the varsity four, which needed to finish in the top 18 in a tough field but was 25th overall of 37 boats. Carolina's time was 5:18.56 "We feel good about what they did," Haney said. "Obviously we wanted to advance, but we were pleased to advance in all the other events for the day."
