We have a winner in the search for the most foreboding headline of the College World Series. The award goes to this headline from the Omaha World-Herald: "Omaha's Rosenblatt Stadium: Hallowed, iconic and doomed." Take that, Rosenblatt Stadium! The story actually is a good look at the CWS venue, which has only this year and next year before the event moves downtown. It will be interesting to see how much of the College World Series feel can be preserved downtown. There's a good chance it might lose some of the homeyness (if that's a word) that makes it special. In fact, Caulton Tudor says it's the country's best sporting event. Another part of that feel is the opening ceremonies. Check out Joe Bray's photo galleries on the front page for shots from last evening. And if you're coming to Omaha, make sure to read Omaha.com's Tips for CWS fans for parking/traffic tips.
It sounds like yesterday's state of college baseball press conference was largely a self-congratulatory affair. Some good quotes from the coaches, though. And the guess is you may hear this story just a few times during the LSU-UVA game: Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor was a model for the Road to Omaha statue. See, and now he's here in person. Like sands through an hourglass, these are the days of our lives.
Oh yes, the games. The main storyline has been ASU's pitching, no matter which starter they use (still no official word). But an interesting note about the Sun Devils is that it was actually last year's team that was supposed to be the title contender, but that talent-stocked team flamed out in the super regionals. This year's team is much younger, and it sometimes shows. The hometown paper says the Sun Devils will make the championship series.
