Team Notes
- Carolina's 5-2 loss to Arizona State was its first to open College World Series play over its run of four straight series appearances. The Tar Heels last dropped their CWS opener in 1989.
- UNC is now 13-16 all-time in CWS play, including an 11-8 in the last four years.
- With the loss, Carolina is now 78-53 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 43-21 under Mike Fox and 31-9 in the postseason since the start of the 2006 tourney.
- Sunday marked the Tar Heels' sixth extra-inning game of the season, and they dropped to 2-4 with the loss to the Sun Devils. Carolina last went extra innings in the College World Series in a 13-inning win over Cal State Fullerton June 16, 2006.
Individual Notes
- Right-hander Alex White set a Carolina record for strikeouts in a College World Series game with 12 versus Arizona State, matching his career high for the second straight start. He now has seven double-digit strikeout games in his career, including three this season. White, who also struck out 12 against East Carolina in the Super Regional, recorded 10-plus Ks in back-to-back starts for the first time in his career.
- With the 12 strikeouts Sunday, Alex White owns a single-season career high of 121, which ranks fourth in school history. He now has 317 for his career, eight off Andrew Miller's school record of 325 set from 2004-06.
- Alex White pitched nine innings for the third time in his career and second time this season. Additionally, White worked at least eight innings for the fifth time this season and for the second straight start. He tossed at least seven innings for the fourth time in his postseason career.
- With a first-inning single, Dustin Ackley extended his NCAA Tournament hitting streak to 20 games dating to the 2007 CWS. He has a hit in 24 of 29 career postseason games and owns 14 multi-hit efforts in NCAA play.
- With two hits Sunday, Dustin Ackley is now tied for third in College World Series history with 22 career base hits in Omaha. Stanford's Sam Fuld holds the record with 24 hits from 2001-03. In the 2009 postseason, Ackley, who was 2-for-5 Sunday, is batting a team-best .519 (14-27) in six games. He is a career .386 hitter (22-57) in Omaha.
- Dustin Ackley became just the sixth player in ACC history to reach the 340-hit mark for his career with two hits Sunday.
- Senior Garrett Gore played in his 19th career College World Series game, which is second all-time. One more game will tie Gore with Southern California's Daryl Arenstein (1970-73) for the career CWS record of 20 games played.
- Four Tar Heels combined for nine of Carolina's 11 base hits on the afternoon. Kyle Seager led the way with three, while Dustin Ackley, Garrett Gore and Mike Cavasinni had two each.
- Kyle Seager was 3-for-4 with his 25th double of the season Sunday. He is tied for second on Carolina's single-season double list behind his 30 two-baggers a year ago and is also second with 65 career doubles. In the 2009 NCAA tourney, Seager is batting .444 (12-27) with 11 RBI in six games. He has 99 hits on the season and needs just one more base hit for his first career 100-hit season.
- With a 2-for-5 effort Sunday, Garrett Gore posted a multi-hit game for the fourth time in six NCAA Tournament games. He is batting .464 (13-28) with three homers and 11 RBI in the postseason.
- Mike Cavasinni went 2-for-4 for his third straight multi-hit game. In the NCAA Tournament, Cavasinni is batting .444 (8-18) over six games.
