Team Notes
- With Tuesday's 11-4 win over Southern Miss, North Carolina improved to 6-1 in bracket-play elimination games over the last three years.
- After recording just two two-out hits and no two-out RBI in Sunday's loss to Arizona State, Carolina delivered 14 two-out base hits and seven two-out RBI in Tuesday's victory.
- The Tar Heels tied a College World Series record with 23 base hits, matching Arizona State (June 5, 1984 and June 10, 1988) and Southern California (June 6, 1998). Carolina's 23 hits are a season best and rank as the most by the Tar Heels since posting 26 against Davidson April 28, 2007.
- UNC has posted 10 or more hits in 12 of the last 13 games, including all seven NCAA Tournament contests. Carolina has tallied at least 17 hits three times in the postseason.
- UNC is now 14-16 all-time in CWS play, including a 12-8 record in the last four years.
- With the win, Carolina is now 79-53 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 44-21 under Mike Fox and 32-9 in the postseason since the start of the 2006 tourney.
Individual Notes
- With five hits Tuesday, Dustin Ackley, who was 5-for-6 with three RBI, bettered the College World Series record for career base hits with 27 to surpass Stanford's Sam Fuld, who had 24 hits from 2001-03. Ackley is a career .429 hitter (27-63) in Omaha and is 7-for-11 in the 2009 CWS.
- Senior Garrett Gore played in his 20th career College World Series game Tuesday, matching Southern California's Daryl Arenstein (1970-73) for the career CWS record. With one more game, Gore will set the record and Tar Heels will hold CWS career records for games (Gore), hits (Ackley) and at-bats (Chad Flack, 73).
- Dustin Ackley's five base hits equaled his career high established earlier this season against VMI Feb. 22 and set a Carolina record in the College World Series. Ackley had four hits against LSU June 19, 2008, and was one of three players (Chad Flack, Tim Federowicz) to hold the previous mark. Ackley, who has logged 16 games with four-plus hits in his career, is the 15th player to record a five-hit game in Omaha and first since 2006. Tennessee's Kris Bennett holds the CWS record with six hits versus Georgia in 2001.
- In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Dustin Ackley is batting a team-best .576 (19-33) in seven games to raise his career postseason average to .419 (54-129).
- Dustin Ackley raised his season average to .421, which would rank third in school history, with five hits Tuesday. His 110 hits are fifth in school history, and he now owns three of the top five single-season hit totals at Carolina. His 73 RBI are tied for sixth, while his 74 runs are tied for seventh.
- With a first-inning RBI single, Dustin Ackley extended his NCAA Tournament hitting streak to 21 games dating to the 2007 CWS. He has a hit in 25 of 30 career postseason games and owns 15 multi-hit efforts in NCAA play.
- Tuesday's win over Southern Miss was the 500th at his alma mater for North Carolina head coach Mike Fox, who is 1,040-347-5 in 26 seasons. Now 500-207-1 in 11 years as the Tar Heels' skipper, Fox is third in school history in victories behind Mike Roberts (780) and Walter Rabb (540).
- Adam Warren held Southern Miss to just three runs on three hits over six innings en route to his 32nd career victory, which is just two off Robert Woodard's school record of 34 set between 2004-07. Warren improved to 6-1 in NCAA play to match Alex White as the winningest postseason pitchers in school history. He also moved to 3-1 in Omaha with his first victory at Rosenblatt Stadium since 2007.
- To offset a career-high-tying five walks, Adam Warren struck out six to bring his single-season total to 103, which is 10th in school history. Warren also picked up his 10th victory to reach double-digits in wins for the second time in his career.
- In his first career CWS game, Seth Baldwin was 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Five of his 11 base hits this season have come in the NCAA Tournament for a .556 average (5-9) in five games.
- Ben Bunting and Ryan Graepel, who were a combined 0-for-10 Sunday, rebounded in a big way Tuesday. Graepel had a career-best four hits and drove in two, while Bunting was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.
- Dustin Ackley moved into the top five in ACC history with 345 base hits for his career.
- With a 2-for-6 effort Tuesday, Garrett Gore posted a multi-hit game for the fifth time in seven NCAA Tournament games. He is batting .441 (15-34) with three homers and 11 RBI in the postseason.
- Mike Cavasinni went 2-for-5 for his fourth straight multi-hit game. He is batting .435 (10-23) in seven NCAA Tournament games.
