Team Notes
- The Tar Heels' 48 wins this season rank fifth in school history, and their 213 victories over the past four years are tops in the country. The senior class of Garrett Gore, Mike McKee and Adam Warren is the winningest four-year class in program history.
- For the fourth straight year, Carolina was the last ACC team standing in the College World Series (Virginia also went 1-2 but was eliminated Wednesday). The Tar Heels have finished in at least fifth place in Omaha in each of the past four years. UNC is the only conference school to reach the CWS in four straight seasons.
- Carolina pitching issued 10 walks for its second-highest total of the season, trailing only a 13-walk effort at Florida State April 12. The Tar Heels had five wild pitches for their highest total since also posting five against James Madison on June 1, 2002.
- The Tar Heels surrendered a season-high 12 runs. Carolina last allowed 12-plus runs in a postseason game in a 14-4 loss to Rice in the 2007 CWS.
- UNC tallied 11 hits Thursday, giving the Tar Heels 10 or more hits in 13 of the last 14 games, including all eight NCAA Tournament contests.
- UNC is now 14-17 all-time in CWS play, including a 12-9 record in the last four years. With Thursday's loss, North Carolina dropped to 6-2 in bracket-play elimination games over the last three years.
- With the loss, Carolina falls to 79-54 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, 44-22 under Mike Fox and 32-10 in the postseason since the start of the 2006 tourney.
Individual Notes
- Senior Garrett Gore played in his 21st career College World Series game Thursday, surpassing Southern California's Daryl Arenstein (20 games, 1970-73) for the career CWS record. Tar Heels now hold College World Series career records for games (Gore), hits (Ackley, 27) and at-bats (Chad Flack, 73).
- With a 2-for-5 effort Thursday, Garrett Gore posted a multi-hit game for the sixth time in eight NCAA Tournament games. He hit .436 (17-39) with three homers and 11 RBI in the postseason.
- Mike Cavasinni went 2-for-4 for his fifth straight multi-hit game. He hit .444 (12-27) in eight NCAA Tournament games.
- With a pair of run-scoring sacrifice bunts, Jacob Stallings matched a career high with two RBI. He also drove in two against VMI Feb. 22 on the opening weekend of the season.
- Carolina starter Matt Harvey held Arizona State to just two hits in 4 1/3 innings but issued a season-high five walks, hit two batters and set a single-game College World Series record with four wild pitches.
- With one hit Thursday, Dustin Ackley extended his CWS record for career hits to 28. Ackley is a career .412 hitter (28-68) in Omaha and was 8-for-16 in the 2009 CWS.
- In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Dustin Ackley hit a team-best .526 (20-38) in eight games to raise his career postseason average to .410 (55-134).
- Dustin Ackley finished 2009 with a season average of .417, which ranks fourth in school history. His 111 hits are fifth in school history, and he now owns three of the top five single-season hit totals at Carolina. His 73 RBI are tied for sixth, while his 75 runs are tied for sixth.
- With a first-inning RBI single, Dustin Ackley extended his NCAA Tournament hitting streak to 22 games dating to the 2007 CWS. He has a hit in 26 of 31 career postseason games and owns 15 multi-hit efforts in NCAA play.
- Kyle Seager went 2-for-5 with an double and an RBI. His 26 doubles are second behind the 30 he logged last year. Seager's 66 career doubles are second in school history.
