CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior midfielder Stephen McCarthy has been named to the Soccer America Preseason All-America Team, which was released Wednesday. McCarthy, who is in his first season in Chapel Hill after transferring from Santa Clara, was a second-team pick by the publication.
McCarthy, a native of Colleyville, Texas, started 60 matches for the Broncos from 2006-08. He tallied eight goals and two assists for 18 career points and was a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection. McCarthy shared the league's freshman of the year award in 2006 and was a freshman All-America choice.
McCarthy, who enrolled at Carolina in January and trained with the Tar Heels this spring, has started both of UNC's preseason exhibition matches and netted the game-winner against VCU Aug. 23.
