CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The two highest scoring men's soccer teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference will square off Saturday when No. 2 North Carolina hosts No. 18 NC State at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (2-0-1) and Wolfpack (3-0-0) are off to unbeaten starts entering the conference opener for both sides.
Paced by four individuals with two goals apiece, Carolina leads the conference with 10 scores in three games, while NC State checks in with eight goals thus far. Cameron Brown, Michael Farfan, Enzo Martinez and Kirk Urso pace the Tar Heels with two goals each, and Ronnie Bouemboue and Tyler Lassiter have both scored twice for the Wolfpack.
UNC reached the 10-goal mark in just three games for the first time since the national championship season of 2001.
Both sides are also off to solid starts defensively, allowing just one goal apiece. Brooks Haggerty owns a 0.31 goals against average in 290 minutes in net for the Tar Heels to best the ACC's keepers that have played more than 90 minutes. Christopher Widman owns a 0.33 mark for State in 270 minutes.
The Tar Heels hold a 47-20-11 lead in the all-time series with NC State, including two straight wins. Carolina scored a 2-1 overtime win last season in Chapel Hill on a Garry Lewis overtime goal. UNC dropped only one match to the Wolfpack since 1997, a 3-1 loss at home in 2006.
Following Saturday's match, Carolina is back in action at home against another Triangle rival, Duke, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.
