CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 2 North Carolina and No. 11 Duke both will put unbeaten records on the line Friday when the two sides renew their rivalry on the pitch Friday at 7 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels (3-0-1, 1-0-0 ACC) have won three straight over the Blue Devils (4-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) and can claim their longest winning streak over Duke since the 1950s with a victory Friday.
Also at stake is a point towards the Carlyle Cup, the all-sports competition between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils. Carolina captured last year's event and has won four of the last five editions.
Admission to Friday's key match is free of charge. The last time Duke visited Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels drew a Fetzer men's record crowd of 4,717, and last week's win over NC State drew 4,221 for the second-largest men's crowd in school history.
The Tar Heels lead the ACC with 12 goals and are tied for fifth nationally with 3.0 goals per game. League co-player of the week Michael Farfan paces Carolina with three goals and an assist for seven points on the season. Enzo Martinez, who set up both goals in the 2-1 win over NC State last week, has tallied two scores on the season, as have Cameron Brown and Kirk Urso.
Senior goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty is second in the league with a 0.47 goals against average and has gone all 380 minutes in net for the Tar Heels, who have yielded only two goals all season.
The Blue Devils have allowed just one score on the season, and are led offensively by Cole Grossman, who has three goals and three assists in just four games.
UNC leads the all-time series by a 38-33-8 margin with three straight victories in the series. The Tar Heels have not taken four in a row from Duke since the 1954-55 seasons.
Following Friday's match, Carolina closes a six-match homestand against East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22.
