The game-winning goal by Alyssa Rich was the second goal of Rich's young career and also her second game-winning goal. She had UNC's only goal in a 1-0 victory over Marquette on September 6.
The game marked the fifth straight meeting between the Tar Heels and the Blue Devils at Fetzer Field that either ended in a tie (0-0 in 2002) or was decided by a 2-1 margin with UNC winning games in 2004, 2007 and 2009 by that separation and Duke winning in 2005 by 2-1. Duke remains the only ACC team to have beaten Carolina at Fetzer Field in history as the Blue Devils have two wins and a tie against the Heels at the historic facility. The last time a game has been decided by more than one goal at Fetzer between the two squads was November 18, 2001 when the Heels beat the Devils 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Carolina improved to 32-2-1 all-time in the series against the Devils.
UNC is now 30-0-3 since falling to Notre Dame at Fetzer Field on September 5, 2008. Carolina is 20-1-1 in ACC openers dating back to the start of league play in 1988. The Tar Heels improved to 22-0 in home ACC openers with the victory.
Nogueira's assist was the 112th point of her career as she moved into a tie with Wendy Gebauer (1985-88) for 19th place in UNC history.
UNC is now 4-0 in one-goal games in 2009.
The Tar Heels are now 18-0-1 in their last 19 ACC regular-season matches since a 1-0 loss at Miami on September 30, 2007.
Carolina has gone 33-1-1 in ACC regular-season matches since a 2-1 loss to Duke at Fetzer Field on October 9, 2005.
Carolina is now 27-5-21 all-time in overtime games.
