RADFORD, Va. - After being shut out for the first time this season last time out, No. 5 North Carolina found its offensive groove early Tuesday, scoring twice in the first 22 minutes en route a 2-0 win over Radford at Cupp Stadium. Billy Schuler scored in the eighth minute, and Michael Farfan extended the lead in the 21st minute, as the Tar Heels (6-1-1) built a first-half advantage they would not relinquish.
Defensively, Carolina limited the Highlanders (2-4-1) to just six shots, and goalkeeper Brooks Haggerty made three saves to notch his third shutout of the season and the ninth of his career.
With the Tar Heels looking to rebound from a 1-0 loss at Maryland last Friday, Schuler found the back of the net for the third time in the last four games when he beat his defender down the far sideline and buried a 10-yard unassisted strike at the 7:24 mark for his second game-winning goal of the season.
Farfan followed just over 13 minutes later with his team-best fourth goal at 20:42. He took a pass in the middle from Cameron Brown, who notched his first assist of the year on the play, and fired a shot from 25 yards for a two-goal cushion at intermission.
Farfan now leads the Tar Heels with nine points on four goals and an assist, while Schuler sits second with eight points on three goals and two helpers.
UNC took 13 shots on the night, putting five on goal, and held a 7-2 edge on corner kicks. Radford put three of its six shots on frame.
Carolina is back at home at 7 p.m. Friday when Virginia comes to Fetzer Field for a key Atlantic Coast Conference match.
