
Tar Heels Take Down Duke, 26-12

The North Carolina wrestling team earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory with a 26-12 defeat of Duke Tuesday night at Carmichael Auditorium. The win improves the Tar Heels to 3-4-1 in dual action and 1-1 in the ACC while Duke falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Jeremy Shaw, Daniel Helena, No. 3 Thomas Scotton, Kyle Kiss, No. 12 Dennis Drury and Ziad Haddad all earned victories for the Tar Heels, who celebrated their Senior Night by honoring the careers of Shaw, Drury, Ben Fiacco and Kevin Owen.
The match started at 133 pounds where Tar Heel senior Jeremy Shaw recorded a major decision victory by a score of 13-2 over Duke's Nick Adamo. With the win, Shaw improved to 12-8 on the season and 1-1 in the conference and the Tar Heels took a 4-0 lead.
At 141 pounds, Ky Corley tied the score late in the third period but fell 5-4 to Mike Bell due to accumulation of riding time. 149-pounder Daniel Helena (2-3) kept the Tar Heels on top with an 8-4 decision over Brent Jorge.
In the 157-pound bout, No. 3 Thomas Scotton registered a 12-4 major decision over Chris Piccolella to add to Carolina's lead. With the victory, Scotton moved to 22-2 overall, 7-1 in dual meets and 1-1 in the ACC. After Kyle Kiss (14-9) picked up a win by forfeit at 165 pounds, UNC led 17-3.
In the 174-pound weight class, Carolina's Thomas Ferguson dropped a 4-3 decision to Duke's Voris Tejada. The match's most exciting contest came at 184 pounds. UNC's Nick Tenpenny used an escape in the final seconds to tie the bout but Diego Bencomo's takedown in overtime clinched a 6-4 decision for Duke and cut the Carolina lead to 17-9.
At 197 pounds, Tar Heel senior and 12th-ranked Dennis Drury pinned John Barone at 2:26 in the first period. The pin was Drury's team-high sixth on the season and improved his record to 17-6.
Heavyweight Ziad Haddad kept the momentum in the Tar Heels' favor with a 10-3 defeat of Andrew Fulk. The victory moved Haddad (5-4) above .500 and he is now 1-0 in ACC action. In the night's final bout, freshman Brian Bokoski dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Duke's Peter Terrezza, bringing the final score to 26-12.
The win secures Carolina a point in the Carlyle Cup standings. The Tar Heels now lead the all-sports competition between the two rivals 6.5 to 2.5.
Carolina is back in action Saturday at Virginia Tech at 2 p.m.
