RALEIGH, N.C. - Dustin Ackley earned his third straight college player of the year award Tuesday, while classmate Alex White garnered the college pitcher of the year award Monday night. Both White and Ackley will be honored at the 60th annual banquet at NC State's McKimmon Center.
Ackley capped his stellar career at Carolina holding school records in hits (346), runs (227), batting average (.412) and total bases (544) in just 207 games. The Walnut Cove, N.C. product was the second pick in the 2009 MLB draft taken by the Seattle Mariners. Ackley, the 2009 National Player of the Year, is the first three-time All-America in Carolina history.
White, an All-America selection in 2008 and a two-time All-ACC pick, owns a 27-14 career record with a 3.96 ERA and 305 strikeouts over 298 innings. The Greenville, N.C., native ranks among the top 10 pitchers in school history with 27 wins (tied for fifth), 305 strikeouts (second) and 298 innings (sixth). White was taken by the Cleveland Indians as the 15th pick in the 2009 MLB draft.
The 2010 Carolina baseball team opens play Feb. 19 against George Washington at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill.
