CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Shane Taylor threw six scoreless frames and fellow freshman Tate Parrish threw three scoreless to help lead Team Neck Chedda past the Fightin' Goitz, 7-0, Tuesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Ben Bunting and Brian Holberton scored twice for the Chedda in the win.
Neck Chedda scored early once again when Ben Bunting kept his hot hitting going with a single to center field in the bottom of the first. A passed ball moved Bunting to second before tagging on a fly ball to right field moved him to third.
The speedster broke down the line when Goitz starter Bryant Gaines went from the windup and easily beat the pitch to the plate to score the game's opening run on a successful steal of home.
The Chedda would take on another run in the bottom of the third when Jacob Stallings delivered his second RBI hit in as many days with a one-run double in the left-centerfield gap that scored Brian Holberton from first to up the lead to 2-0.
Starter Shane Taylor was dealing from the onset as he did not allow a hit until the third inning but disposed of the baserunner quickly with an inning-ending double play.
Taylor set down the side in order in the fifth and finished his day after six scoreless innings that never saw a runner reach third base. Taylor allowed just two hits, a walk and hit a batter in his 18 outs of work.
Taylor's squad provided more run support in the bottom of the sixth when they pushed five runs across the plate. Colin Moran drove in two of those runs with a two-run single to left-center, Holberton drove in a run with an RBI bunt single and Seth Baldwin added his third RBI of the fall with a single later in the inning.
Another freshman, Tate Parrish, came on in relief of Taylor in the top of the seventh and picked up where Taylor left off. Parrish allowed three hits during three innings of work getting out of an early jam in the seventh to earn the three-inning save for Team Neck Chedda.
With the win Neck Chedda evened the series with the Fightin' Goitz at one game apiece creating a winner take all situation for Wednesday's game at 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
Taking the mound for the Fightin' Goitz will be freshman Jake Cole, while redshirt freshman Tim Brechbuehler will toe the slab for Neck Chedda.
