Bernard Helps Even Series At Two Games Apiece

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Fightin' Goitz received three RBI from Parks Jordan and four stellar innings from Zach Bernard to take game one of the second series by an 8-4 margin Friday night over Team Neck Chedda. Tommy Coyle and Brian Goodwin each crossed the plate three times for the Goitz who evened up the overall series 2-2. Game five is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The Fightin' Goitz delivered the initial strike in the top of the first when Parks Jordan connected on his first hit of the fall, a two-run single back up the middle that scored Brian Goodwin and Tommy Coyle.
Jacob Stallings connected on his second home run of the fall when he drove a pitch over the left field wall cutting the Goitz' lead in half at 2-1.
Coyle scored again in the top of the second when he hit a one-out double into left-center and advanced to third when the centerfielder misplayed the ball. Brian Goodwin took advantage of the runner on third and lifted a ball down the left field line deep enough to score Coyle and push the lead to 3-1.
Neck Chedda took advantage of an error in the bottom half of the inning as well when Colin Moran reached on an infield error before Ben Bunting wrapped a triple down the right field line cutting the defecit to 3-2 after two.
The Goitz added an unearned run in the top of the third to lengthen their lead before Moran added a home run for Neck Chedda in the fourth.
The catchers produced the next two runs in the game as Matt Roberts recorded an RBI single in the fifth before Stallings tacked on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make the score 5-4 heading into the top half of the seventh.
A pair of bases loaded walks and an RBI single off the bat of Jeff Bouton blew the game open in the top of the seventh as the Fightin' Goitz extended their lead to 8-4.
The bullpens took over from there not allowing a run over the next two and a half innings. Zach Bernard took over in the sixth and was dominant from the start allowing just one run on one hit over four innings.
ernard set down Chedda in order in the seventh and eighth and an error kept him from another perfect inning in the ninth as the Goitz evened the overall series at two games apiece.
The game one starters, Chris Munnelly and Kent Emanuel, will take the hill on Saturday in game number five with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
