CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Thomas Zengel went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs as Team Neck Chedda evened the second series of the Fall World Series at one game apiece Saturday with a 7-2 win. Kent Emanuel picked up the win as he tossed five innings of one-run ball.
The Fightin' Goitz continued their strong hitting from Friday night in the bottom of the first when Brian Goodwin showed off his wheels when he blasted a ball to the left-center field gap and raced around for a two-out triple.
Matt Roberts came through with the clutch hit for the Goitz when he laced a ball into center to plate Goodwin from third and give the Goitz an early 1-0 lead.
Starter Chris Munnelly kept the Chedda in check through the opening three innings before they struck for a three-spot in the top of the fourth.
Brett Knief led off the inning with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. A Ben Bunting walk put runners at first and second with one out before the pair moved up when Munnelly's pickoff attempt sailed into center field.
Brian Holberton grounded out to first base allowing Knief to beat a close throw at the plate tying the score at one apiece. Jacob Stallings made it 2-1 with an RBI single to left field before Zengel made it a 3-1 lead when he connected on a triple just out of the reach of Jeff Bouton in right field scoring Stallings from first.
Team Neck Chedda made it 4-1 in the top of the sixth when Zengel struck again, this time with an RBI single back up the middle that scored Holberton who reached via error earlier in the frame.
The top of the eighth inning saw Team Neck Chedda strike for three more runs as Bunting, Holberton and Stallings all tallied RBI singles to up the lead to 7-1.
The Goitz were able to get one run back in the bottom half of the eighth when Tommy Coyle switched spots with Tarron Robinson with an RBI double but the Goitz were held to the lone run by releiver Andrew Smith who earned his first save of the Fall World Series.
Emanuel earned the win tossing five innings of one-run ball before Smith came on and delivered four one-run innings of his own in the win.
The second series of the Fall World Series is knotted up at one game apiece with the decisive game three set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. If Neck Chedda wins on Sunday they will claim the prestigious Fall World Series title but if the Fightin' Goitz bounce back for the win the teams will play a winner-take-all game seven on Monday at 2 p.m.
