CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Starting pitchers Garrett Davis and Tim Brechbuehler went head-to-head in the final game of the Fall World Series and neither flinched as they allowed just three runs in 17 combined innings Monday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Fightin' Goitz forced the game into extra innings with a single run in the ninth before Team Neck Chedda answered with a pair of unearned runs in the 10th for the game seven and series win.
Davis and Brechbuehler were dealing from the start as each allowed one runner in the opening two frames with nobody getting past second base.
Team Neck Chedda picked up a lead off single from Ben Bunting but he was quickly erased by Matt Roberts on a delay steal attempt. Brian Holberton nearly copied Bunting's exact sequence reaching on a single and then being thrown out in a run down between first and second killing any Neck Chedda threat in the third.
The Goitz finally got to Brechbuehler in the third when Chaz Frank led off with a single back up the middle before Tommy Coyle moved him to second with a single through the right side.
Brian Goodwin followed with a perfect bunt single down the third base line loading the bases for Matt Roberts. The freshman backstop hit a bouncing ball to second base that resulted in a routine 4-6-3 double play but scored Frank from third for the first run of the game.
Davis and Brechbuehler settled down from that point sitting down the next 18 batters in order. Brett Knief snapped the streak in the top of the seventh when he rifled a ball down the right field line. Seth Baldwin moved Knief to third with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher before Ben Bunting came through with an RBI single to right field to knot the game at 1-1.
Brian Holberton followed with a shot past the third baseman and put runners on the corners for Jacob Stallings. The junior catcher bunted a ball down the first base line that allowed Bunting to score from third with ease and give Neck Chedda the lead.
rechbuehler allowed a two-out single to Brian Goodwin and moved him to second on a balk but was able to get out of the jam in the seventh and keep the lead intact for his squad.
After a scoreless eighth the Fightin' Goitz found their backs against the wall in the bottom half of the ninth. Cody Penny came on for Brechbuehler who finished the day with eight one-run innings.
ack-to-back singles by Coyle and Goodwin put the tying run at third for Roberts who did his job and lifted a ball to left field deep enough to score Coyle from third and force extra innings.
Brett Knief led off the top of the 10th with a single to right field and moved to second when Seth Baldwin's sacrifice bunt forced pitcher Zach Bernard into a throw that pulled Tarron Robinson off of first base.
A wild pitch moved Knief and Baldwin up a base for Bunting who drew a walk loading the bases for Brian Holberton. Holberton hit a ground ball to shortstop Tommy Coyle who threw home for the force. Roberts attempted to double off Holberton at first but his throw ricocheted off Holberton and past Robinson at first allowing Baldwin and Bunting to score and give Neck Chedda a 4-2 advantage.
Penny was able to close the door in the 10th giving Neck Chedda the game seven and series win.
