Carolina Golfers In Third Place At Landfall

The Tar Heels, coming off of a fifth place finish at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, are off to a great start at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington. The Carolina golfers are in third place after firing a three-over par 291 in the opening round. Leading the Tar Heels was freshman Katherine Perry who posted a 2-under-par 70 in Friday's first round.
"The team played well today for the most part," said Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "We really started out very strong, but faltered a bit coming in. Our freshman did very very well with Katherine (Perry) shooting 2-under and Casey (Grice) at 1-under-par. We look forward to competing tomorrow. I think we'll concentrate on finishing stronger and we'll have a great round."
Perry, hailing from Cary, N.C., shot an amazing round firing four birdies and two bogeys. She led the Tar Heels and is tied for individual lead at 2-under 70. Casey Grice, a freshman from College Station, Texas, was the second low Tar Heel after posting a one-under 71 tying her for fourth. Sophomore Courtney Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., carded four bogeys and a birdie for her three-over 75. Gunter is tied for 28th place. Catherine O'Donnell, a junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., is tied for 43rd with freshman teammate Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., after firing five-over 77 totals.
Duke and Texas lead the18-team field and in a tie for first place with three-over 291 totals. North Carolina is just two strokes back alone in third at five-over 293 and UCLA is another stroke behind in fourth with a six-over 294. South Carolina and Notre Dame are tied for fifth with 11-over 299 totals. Seventh place belongs to NC State after posting a 13-over 301 and Michigan State is eighth at 16-over 304. Completing the top 10 teams after the first round are Virginia and Wake Forest. Both teams are tied for ninth with 17-over 305 totals.
Atlantic Coast Conference players dominate the leader board with six individuals among the top 11. There is a three-way tie for first place between Perry of North Carolina, Kim Donovan of Duke and Caroline Ellington of NC State as each fired 2-under 70 totals. Tied for fourth are Virginia's Brittany Altomare, Duke's Aleja Cangrejo, Carolina's Grice and Texas' Haley Stehpens with 1-under 71 totals. Katie Burnett of South Carolina, Allyssa Ferrell of Michigan State, Becca Huffer of Notre Dame and Christine Wolf of Chattanooga are all tied for eighth at even par 72.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course which features a par 72, 6,244-yard layout. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
