WILMINGTON, N.C. -
The UNC women's golf team fired a 1-under 287 in the second round of The Landfall Tradition and jumped up to a tie for second place at 4-over 580 going into Sunday's final round. Two Tar Heel freshmen, Casey Grice and Katherine Perry, are tied for third place in the individual race.
"It was a little bit of a shaky start, but the girls kept it together and had some birdies coming in," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "We just played some solid golf on a tough golf course. We're looking forward to tomorrow - it will be some great competition, beautiful weather and a great golf course. We hope to have a good round."
Grice, from College Station, Texas, fired a 1-under 71 in the second round as did Tar Heel Catherine O'Donnell, a junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Grice started out with a birdie on hole #1 and then bogeyed three of the next five holes, but held her own before picking up birdies on holes 13, 14 and 16. O'Donnell bogeyed the first two holes, but then turned it around and birdied four holes before picking up a bogey on hole #17. The 1-under 71 score put Grice in a tie for third place at 2-under 142 while O'Donnell is tied for 15th at 4-over 148. Perry, who hails from Cary, N.C., fired an even par 72 and, like Grice, is tied for third place at 2-under 142. Courtney Gunter, a sophomore from Matthews, N.C., carded a 1-over 73 and is tied with O'Donnell for 15th place at 4-over 148. Freshman Jackie Chang, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., shot a 6-over 78 for a 155 total and is tied for 54th place.
