WILMINGTON, N.C.-
The North Carolina women's golf team placed second among a competitive field in the Landfall Tradition on Sunday, carding a three-round, 21-over-par 885. Tar Heel freshman Casey Grice finished tied for third in the individual standings, shooting an even-par 216 for the weekend.
The Tar Heels, ranked No. 13 nationally, were tied for second place with No. 5 UCLA after two rounds, trailing No. 6 Duke who sat in first at one under par. While the Blue Devils unraveled Sunday, shooting a 28-over-par 316 in the final round to finish fourth, the Tar Heels and Bruins battled for the top spot. The Tar Heels couldn't hang on, finishing five shots back of the winner after firing a 17-over-par 305.
"We were pretty much in the lead throughout the event and just struggled coming in," said North Carolina head coach Jan Mann. "It was pretty difficult out there today, a lot of tough hole locations."
Individually, Grice's third-place finish was not the only standout performance for the Tar Heels. Junior Catherine O'Donnell finished directly behind Grice in fifth, shooting a one-over-par 217. Katherine Perry, another red-hot freshman who was two under coming into Sunday, could not maintain her blazing pace and carded a three-round total of 228, good for 12 over par and 33rd place. Another freshman, Jackie Chang, finished in a tie for 46th with a 15-over-par 231, improving from 54th after two rounds. Courtney Gunter, a sophomore, dropped from 15th to 58th with Sunday's tough greens, shooting a total of 234, or 18 over par.
The Tar Heels continue to improve as the season progresses, and this weekend built on their fifth-place performance as hosts of the Tar Heel Invitational. North Carolina finished second this weekend in a field of 18, 15 of whom are currently ranked in Golfstat's top 50. The Tar Heels topped nationally-ranked ACC rivals Duke (No. 6), Virginia (No. 9) and Wake Forest (No. 15) at the tournament from the Country Club of Landfall - Dye Course in Wilmington.
"It was a good experience for the team and hopefully next year we'll come away with first," said Mann.
