CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Kelsey Kolojejchick scored in the 60th minute of play to push North Carolina to a 1-0 field hockey win over visiting California Monday afternoon at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The second-ranked Tar Heels improved to 12-0 on the season, while the Golden Bears fell to 5-6.
Kolojejchick's goal, her team-high 12th of the season, saved the day for Carolina, which outshot Cal by a wide margin but to that point had been unable to get an on-target ball past California keeper Maddie Hand. With less than 11 minutes to play in the game, Kolojejchick dribbled in and shot from the top of the circle, sending a ball to the left side of the cage. Hand, who made 13 saves on the day, got her stick on it, but couldn't stop the gamewinner from going in.
UNC totaled 27 shots, 17 after halftime, to one by California and drew seven penalty corners while Cal had none.
Next up for Carolina is a trip to the Northeast, where the Tar Heels will play an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Boston College on Friday at 4 p.m. On Sunday, UNC will face Connecticut at noon at B.C.'s field in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
