Nov. 22, 2010
Sophomore Scott Goodwin, a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team from Raleigh, N.C., has been named the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for November 15-21, 2010. Goodwin made seven saves but none bigger than one that did not show up on the stat sheet as he parried away a penalty in the third round of a shootout Sunday night to help Carolina advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Goodwin stopped Georgetown's Seth C'deBaca's penalty attempt with a dive to his left to put Carolina in control of the shootout. The Raleigh, N.C., native came up with seven saves in 110 minutes of action, including the most athletic of the night just after halftime when a header from 8 yards out was destined for the top of the net but Goodwin punched the ball clear to preserve his 11th shutout of the season. Goodwin owns the 10th lowest goals against average in the nation at 0.60 per game.
