
Zeller Leads Tar Heels Past Barton In Exhibition, 108-67

Tyler Zeller scored 25 points and No. 8 North Carolina beat Barton 108-67 in an exhibition game Friday night.John Henson had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels, while heralded rookie Harrison Barnes had a quiet night with seven points on 2-for-9 shooting and six turnovers. Earlier this week, Barnes became the first freshman named to The Associated Press preseason All-America team since voting began before the 1986-87 season.
North Carolina used an 11-0 first-half spurt to build a double-digit margin then had another 11-0 run late in the half to blow the game open. Dexter Strickland hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to give North Carolina a 57-35 halftime lead that grew to 46 points.
Zeller's 25 points led six Tar Heels in double figures, a list that also included Justin Watts (13 points on 6 of 7 shooting), Dexter Strickland (12 points on 5 of 9 shooting with six assists), Leslie McDonald (12 points on 5 of 9 shooting with five rebounds), John Henson (10 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots) and freshman guard Reggie Bullock (10 points on 4 of 10 shooting). Freshman point guard Kendall Marshall dished out nine assists with just one turnover.
Carolina shot 54.1 percent as a team for the game, shooting 50 percent or better in both halves. The UNC defense held Barton to 35.1 percent shooting, including 32.6 percent in the second half.
Gerald Boston scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs, an instate program that won the Division II national championship four seasons ago.
Friday's game served as the final tuneup for the Tar Heels before next Friday's regular season opener against Lipscomb in Chapel Hill.
