LUBBOCK, TEX. - B.J. Surhoff, former Tar Heel great, was one of ten members inducted in the 2010 College Baseball Hall of Fame Thursday. Surhoff joins fellow Atlantic Coast Conference player Charles Teague in the last class of 2010, voted by more than 110 representatives from coast to coast. Voters include retired and active coaches, media members and previous inductees.
Surhoff is one of four players in the history of the North Carolina baseball to earn the National Player of the Year Award. The Bronx, N.Y., native was the Sporting News National Player of the Year in 1985 en route to becoming the No.1 overall pick in the 1985 Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Surhoff played 19 seasons in the MLB with three different teams - the Brewers, the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. He amassed over 2,300 hits and 1,000 RBIs in his 19-year career.
A catcher at the University of North Carolina from 1983-1985, Surhoff is the only North Carolina player to ever earn first-team All-America honors in back-to-back seasons. Surhoff's No. 9 jersey, is one of two numbers in the history of the program to be retired. A recipient of the 1985 Anthony J. McKevlin Award as the ACC's top athlete, Surhoff ranks in the top ten in nearly every offensive category in UNC's history. Surhoff's career .392 batting average stood for over 24 years as the program's top average, until Dustin Ackley's .412 batting average eclipsed that mark in 2009.
