CHAPEL HILL --- No. 11 North Carolina improved to 7-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Wisconsin and Elon Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center. Carolina topped the Badgers, 6-1, before returning later in the day to drop Elon, 7-0. Sanaz Marand, Jelena Durisic and Zoe De Bruycker each won two singles matches to lead the Tar Heels in their final matches before next weekend's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis.
UNC wasted little time in taking control against Wisconsin (2-3) in the opener, with Marand and Sophie Grabinski easing to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston matched their teammates with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 to take the point.
The top of the Tar Heel lineup did the heavy lifting in singles, as Tsang, Durisic and Marand posted tidy straight-set victories to seal the team victory. Featherston added a straight-set win of her own before De Bruycker rallied from a set down to score a third-set tiebreak victory. The Badgers got the last point of the match with a win at the No. 6 position.
In the late match, Elon (4-3) put up an early fight in doubles before Carolina pulled away at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Featherston scored an 8-4 win at No. 2, with De Bruycker and Linzee Mabrey following soon after with an 8-2 win at No. 3. The Phoenix did spring an upset at the top position, with Anna Milian and Elisa Simonetti topping No. 28 Jocelyn Ffriend and Haley Hemm, 8-6.
Carolina would bounce back after a lackluster doubles point, however, scoring six straight-set wins, including De Bruycker's 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of Briana Berne at No. 4. Durisic was equally as dominant at No. 2, breezing past Paige Kensrue, 6-2, 6-2. Ffriend, battling through an injury, sealed the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 4, while Suarez-Malaguti, Marand and Mabrey finished the sweep.
UNC will now begin preparations for next weekend's ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Wisconsin's Nielson Tennis Stadium. The Tar Heels will face No. 4 Georgia in the first round on Friday, Feb. 12. Look for more details on Indoor Nationals later in the week.
