Tar Heels Take Two Seconds At Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - North Carolina's varsity eight and novice eight each finished second in their respecitve finals on Sunday at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River. The varsity eight placed second in the third-level final with a time of 6:55.32, just behind Delaware's 6:52.05 and ahead of Loyola, Miami, MIT and Mercyhurst. On Saturday, the Tar Heels were fourth in their heat in 6:54.02, then placed fifth in their semifinal (6:57.82) to advance to a spot in the third-level final.
The UNC varsity eight was Emma Shaw (coxswain), Kelsey Grich (stroke), Alex McClelland, Megan McMullin, JoAnne Rogers, Sarah Day, Blair Meiggs, Andi Drabot and Brittany Walsh (bow).
The novice eight won its heat on Saturday in 7:23.05 then placed fourth in the semifinal (7:22.53) to qualify for the petite final. UNC took second in the petite final in 7:23.61, behind Loyola (7:19.51) and ahead of New Hampshire, Marist, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh.
The novice eight lineup was Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Anastasia Bury, Sarah Giles, Alyssa Stewart, Allie Russell, Ashley Cox, Emily Chapin, Alex Box and Isabel Blue.
"I feel like we're making advances and learning so much from week to week," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "The varsity eight beat teams this weekend that had beaten them. And were really consistent with their times throughout the weekend. Several other boats had faster times than teams that have beaten us this season."
In racing on Saturday, the Carolina novice four was third in its heat in 9:03.38 then placed sixth in its semifinal in 8:45.92. On Sunday in third-level final, UNC was fourth in 8:53.81. The Carolina novice four lineup was Courtney Dinkins (coxswain), Brye Balkum, Liz Moser, Audrey Ann Lavallee and Elizabeth Lynch.
The UNC varsity four was fourth in its Saturday heat in 8:18.96. The Tar Heel lineup was Sarah Cook (coxswain), Kristi Roblin (stroke), Lindsay Paterniti, Toni Moran and Jasmine Dennis (bow).
The second varsity eight was sixth in its Saturday heat in 7:14.27. Carolina's second varsity eight lineup was Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Sefe Emokpae (stroke), Erin Berg, Alex Biggers, Liz Teel, Shelby Austin, Claire Wardius, Jessica Crumpler and Leah Kosow (bow).
"The Knecht Cup is a long weekend, but because there's so much racing, it's a great weekend," Haney said. "We're looking foward to having some time to practice now, with two weeks to go before ACCs."
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on April 24 in Clemson, S.C.
