Tar Heels Fall To Chanticleers 12-4

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 9 Coastal Carolina scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed defeating No. 21 North Carolina 12-4 Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels' Jimmy Messer suffers the loss as Carolina falls to 22-13 overall. The Chanticleer's Austin Fleet earns the win improving Coastal Carolina to 29-5 on the year.
Messer (1-1) lasted just two thirds on an inning allowing four runs on two hits in the first. Carolina used seven different pitchers in relief - Greg Holt, Zach Bernard, Cody Penny, R.C. Orlan, Teddy Mitrosilis, Bryant Gaines and Parker Thomas. Gaines looked strong throwing one shutout inning allowing no hits. Thomas fanned the side in the ninth.
Fleet (4-1) earns the win throwing 4.1 shutout innings. Starter Matt Laney allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Jackson Geary allowed one run in the ninth.
Ben Bunting paced the Carolina attack with two hits. Jesse Wierzbicki, Dillon Hazlett and Tommy Coyle all added a hit and RBI. Mike Cavasinni registered one hit to hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games. The Tar Heels posted 10 hits, but left 10 runners on base.
The Chanticleers darted out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame. Messer struggled to find the zone walking two Coastal batters early. After a two-RBI single off the bat of Tommy La Stella, Adam Rice then ripped a two-run home run over the left center field fence. Holt entered to pitch ending the first inning for the Tar Heels.
Coastal added to their lead in the third inning after a walk and single gave the Chanticleers two base runners. Daniel Bowman then tattooed his seventh home run on the year over the center field fence to give Coastal Carolina a 7-0 lead on just four hits.
The Chanticleers tacked on another run in the fourth after a Rico Noel RBI single scored Chance Gilmore. Bernard entered to pitch with one runner and one out in the fourth, but Scott Woodward greeted him with a two-run home run to extend the Coastal led to 10-0.
The Tar Heels finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth scoring three runs on three hits. After a leadoff Bunting double, Wierzbicki knocked him in on a RBI single to left field. Hazlett later hit a sacrifice fly to score Wierzbicki. Levi Michael, who reached on a walk, scored on an infield single off the bat of Tommy Coyle. Carolina trailed 10-3 after four frames.
Coastal scored for the third consecutive inning plating one run on two Carolina errors in the fifth. The Chanticleers manufactured their first 11 runs on just eight hits.
The Chanticleers scored their twelfth run on an infield single in the top of the seventh. Coastal notched 10 hits, but scored 12 runs on two Tar Heel errors and eight staff walks. Six of the first seven Coastal batters walked also scored.
The Tar Heels will travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to challenge Miami for a three-game set beginning Friday.
