CHAPEL HILL --- No. 1 North Carolina finished the first 11-0 regular season in Atlantic Coast Conference history with a 4-0 win over No. 15 Florida State Sunday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Sanaz Marand, Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston scored singles victores to lead Carolina, which will enter next week's ACC Championships in Cary, N.C., as the top seed for the first time in over two decades.
UNC (24-3) started strong on all three doubles courts and never let up.
Marand and Tsang were first to finish with a dominant 8-1 victory over Lauren McCreless and Francesca Segarelli on court one.
Sophie Grabinski and Jelena Durisic then sealed the point on court two with an 8-3 win over Federica Suess and Jessica Sucupira.
The Tar Heels continued to apply the pressure in singles and Florida State (12-9, 6-4 ACC) was unable to keep pace.
At the top of the lineup, No. 30 Marand wasted no time in disposing of No. 23 McCreless, 6-3, 6-1, to make it 2-0 in favor of Carolina.
From there it was only a matter of which courts would finish, as the two sides decided beforehand to stop the match early once a winner had been determined.
Featherston made it 3-0 on court five with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Suess, leaving it up to Tsang and Durisic to get the final point.
Tsang looked poised to finish the job at No. 2 before dropping a pair of games to Katie Rybakova in the second set to make it 6-2, 5-4. One court over, Durisic rallied from down 5-2 in the second to force a tiebreak against Segarelli at No. 3.
Fittingly, however, it was Tsang who got the final win on Senior Day, topping Rybakova, 6-2, 6-4, before Durisic could finish off Segarelli.
UNC will now prepare for next week's ACC Championships at the Cary Tennis Center in nearby Cary, N.C. The top-seeded Tar Heels will receive a bye into the quarterfinals and will play their first match Friday at 9 a.m. For more information, visit http://www.theacc.com/championships/10-tennis-championship.html.
